Spotlighting Apprentices Lewis Munro & Calum Smith
At EnerMech, nurturing early careers is a core part of our long‑term commitment to the energy industry and the communities we operate in. National Apprenticeship Week gives us the chance to celebrate the incredible contribution our apprentices make across the business , bringing fresh perspectives, developing technical capability, and strengthening the future of our teams.
This year, we’re highlighting two of our third‑year apprentices: Lewis Munro, Electrical Engineering Apprentice, and Calum Smith, Mechanical Apprentice. Both are gaining valuable experience across workshops, developing critical engineering skills, and shaping bright futures within the industry.
Below, they share their journeys so far, what they’ve learned, and their ambitions for the years ahead.
Q&A: Lewis Munro — Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Apprentice
What inspired you to apply for an apprenticeship at EnerMech?
I wanted to start a career in engineering because I enjoy practical work and learning how things work. EnerMech stood out to me because it has a strong reputation and offers good training. I liked that the apprenticeship gives you real work experience while learning at the same time. It felt like a great place to start my career.
Can you tell us a bit about your apprenticeship so far and where you are in the programme?
I am currently in the 3rd year of my apprenticeship. So far, I have worked in different workshops and learned about different types of electrical and mechanical equipment. I’ve been able to work alongside experienced engineers and get hands‑on experience, which has helped me build my skills and confidence.
What have been some of your key learnings or highlights during your time in the programme?
I have learned a lot about working safely and using tools and equipment properly. I’ve gained hands‑on experience and a better understanding of how the energy industry works. One of the main highlights has been getting more responsibility as I improve and becoming more confident in my abilities.
How has your apprenticeship helped you grow, professionally or personally?
My apprenticeship has helped me become more confident and responsible. I’ve improved my teamwork and communication skills, and I’ve learned how to manage my time better. It has helped me grow both in my work skills and as a person. Working as part of a team is also a key life skill which I have developed through the apprenticeship.
What are your goals for the remainder of your apprenticeship and beyond?
For the rest of my apprenticeship, I want to keep learning and improving my skills. I hope to gain as much experience as possible and become fully confident in my role. In the future, I would like to continue developing my career and possibly specialise in a certain area so I can start my offshore journey.
Q&A: Calum Smith — Mechanical Apprentice
What inspired you to apply for an apprenticeship at EnerMech?
I saw a good opportunity to advance my skills in the workplace — a good starting point in my career.
Can you tell us a bit about your apprenticeship so far and where you are in the programme?
I am now in my third year of my apprenticeship. I have moved onto a new workshop working on cranes; I was previously working with equipment rental.
What have been some of your key learnings or highlights during your time in the programme?
Learning to strip and service offshore tooling independently was a proud moment of mine. This apprenticeship has let me grow my confidence in applying the knowledge and skills I have gained into real jobs and situations.
How has your apprenticeship helped you grow, professionally or personally?
My apprenticeship has helped me to better simple personal skills such as communicating and timekeeping, just as much as it has helped me find a starting point in the industry.
What are your goals for the remainder of your apprenticeship and beyond?
My goals for the remainder of my apprenticeship are to keep taking on important lessons and skills from my peers and to develop myself to be the best I can be in the workplace.
Lewis and Calum’s experiences show the value of EnerMech’s apprenticeship programme, combining hands‑on learning, real responsibility, and strong mentorship to help young professionals build their technical and personal skills. As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud of their achievements and excited to see how their careers develop.
A huge thank you to all our apprentices, trainers, and teams who continue to support the next generation of engineering talent.
