Saturday marked International Women’s Day 2025, which celebrated females across the globe – and most importantly, the incredible individuals working at EnerMech. As such, we’re proud to recognize our talented female colleagues who are making an impact every day.
This year’s theme, #AccelerateAction, highlighted the importance of driving real change and making progress toward full gender parity.
To mark the occasion, we spoke with Lisa Santospirito, QHSE manager in Australia, and Michaela Black, an NDT technician whom she supports. Here, they share their experiences, the importance of speaking up in safety discussions, and how we can all play a role in building an inclusive and supportive workplace.
Lisa, could you first tell us a bit more about your role and seeing others female colleagues flourish?
“As a QHSE manager I aim to visit as many of the sites we work on to get a good understanding of our client’s expectations, what the potential safety hazards are that we may encounter, and what the general working conditions are like.
“I really enjoy getting on site with the team to learn more about what they do and during some of these visits I’ve had the privilege of seeing Michaela lead safety discussions, whether it is out in the field or during toolbox meetings.
“One of my key responsibilities is reviewing the Employee Work Observation Cards (EWOC) that are sent through each month. A good example is the high-quality detailed EWOC submissions from Michaela, which help to identify safety concerns and mitigate them before they become a hazard. She has never been afraid to speak up and raise safety issues, which has earned her a lot of respect from her team, the business and our client.”
Michaela, working in male-dominated teams, women can sometimes feel hesitant to share their thoughts – how can we shift this mindset and create a culture of confidence?
“I believe it’s important for leaders to actively invite diverse viewpoints from everyone in the team to ensure all voices are heard and advocate for those who may find it harder to speak up. Shifting mindsets can take time, but with consistent efforts from leadership and fellow team members, you can start to create an environment that empowers everyone to be able to offer input and contribute confidently.”
What strategies can women use to assert themselves when expressing safety concerns?
Michaela: “When flagging any issues, it is important to be clear and assertive. If something doesn’t feel right, it usually isn’t. If need be, you can involve others to add weight and share the same concern. It’s also important to emphasize not only how it may impact your own safety and wellbeing, but that of those around you as well. If initial attempts go unheard, never hesitate to stop a job that feels unsafe and escalate the matter further.”
Lisa, how can leaders and colleagues actively encourage women to feel empowered in safety discussions?
“Create an inclusive environment by actively listening to ensure everyone’s voice is heard and their contributions are valued. Encourage participation by creating safe spaces that are non-judgemental where women can openly express their concerns.”
And what advice would you give to someone who wants to take more initiative in safety matters but isn’t sure where to start?
“Start by talking to your leader or to your local safety team. If you don’t have one, you could consider becoming a health and safety representative (HSR). You develop so much more in-depth knowledge, and it will also allow you to network with other HSRs.”
Who has inspired or supported you in your career, and how has that impacted your journey?
Lisa: “I started my career in health and safety as a HSR for my team. Networking with so many people who all felt passionate about keeping our teams safe, set me along the path to where I am today. The biggest impact for me was hearing the stories from those who had life changing injuries and what they wished they had done differently at the time. These people always encouraged us to speak up if we were unsure. I have learned that the only stupid question is the one you do not ask. Never be afraid to ask, ‘is this safe’, ‘is there another way’, or ‘what could go wrong’, to help prevent a concern becoming a reality.”
Between the two of you, what three tips can you share for allies, especially male colleagues, to support their female peers in safety-related conversations?
“One: Actively and respectfully listen without passing judgement is the first step. Validating a female colleague’s views and experiences is essential when she expresses worries regarding safety. Being tolerant and empathetic can make a difference.
“Two: Male supporters can help to amplify the voices of their female coworkers by making sure their concerns are heard. This could entail raising concerns at meetings or being more outspoken when promoting their suggested safety issue solutions.
“Three: Establish safe spaces for conversations around safety. This means creating a work environment where women feel comfortable voicing their concerns and sharing their thoughts without fear of retaliation or dismissal.”
We recently celebrated National Apprenticeship Week in the UK, an initiative that celebrates the value, opportunities, and impact of apprenticeships.
This year’s theme, Skills for Life, highlighted how apprenticeships help individuals build rewarding careers while enabling employers to develop a future-ready workforce, an ethos that we at EnerMech fully embrace to help launch the careers of those entering the energy sector.
We are proud we can develop our people through opportunities that help them progress and grow as individuals. Enabling our team to flourish and take their careers to the next level is one of our key priorities. Ultimately, people are at the centre of everything we do in our pursuit of leading innovation and improving standards across all disciplines.
We employ apprentices across the globe, and to recognize the contribution they make to our business, we asked some of our Aberdeen-based apprentices for their thoughts on being an apprentice and what it has given them.
Filip Basczynski, an electrical apprentice in the Aberdeen facilities team, said he enjoys the variety of work he gets to do as part of the team.
“I decided to become an apprentice as it was a good way to get hands-on experience in the field I was interested in and already studying,” Filip said. “I decided to join EnerMech because of the opportunities and training available as well as the variety of work which ranges from household work to ATEX electrical work. I’d advise anyone interested in becoming an apprentice to try to get experience in any related work or hobbies if they’re still studying.”
Shaun Rooney said he enjoys working with different people because he learns something different from each person. He particularly enjoys client site work as it lets him see what happens and how things work there compared to the workshop.
“No two days are the same,” said Shaun. “There are new problems to solve every day which keeps you on your toes and means you must be ready to adapt to new situations. I chose to work at EnerMech because I believed they would give me the best opportunity to develop myself and my career.”
Abigail Groves, an apprentice mechanical technician, also enjoys the variety of different jobs and projects she works on. She chose an apprenticeship to progress her career.
“I came into the apprenticeship scheme with advanced qualifications, so I am now mainly working alongside qualified technicians to apply my knowledge in a work setting,” Abigail said. “Following a project from the strip down process all the way through to the rebuild process has developed my skills and I continue to pick up information which I can apply to various jobs.”
Calum Smith, an equipment technician apprentice, said his apprenticeship has helped him develop his organizational, timekeeping, communication, problem solving and planning skills.
“I enjoy working practically and want to gain further qualifications whilst doing so,” Calum said. “When I investigated apprenticeship schemes and how you learn on the job and become fully qualified by the end, I made my mind up that I wanted to do this. The advice I’d give to anyone considering becoming an apprentice is to always be engaged with what’s going on as you may gain skills and knowledge where you won’t expect.”
Connor Rattray joined EnerMech because his friends recommended the company as a great place to work.
“I enjoy all the variety in the work I do. Since becoming an apprentice, I’ve learned how to use a range of different tools safely and properly and I’ve had mentors and colleagues who have helped me on my journey. My advice to someone considering an apprenticeship is not to let themselves get overwhelmed by the amount of information you get.”
EnerMech has been selected to carry out pre-commissioning work on the ONE GUYANA FPSO for Guyana Deepwater Operations, SBM Offshore’s subsidiary in Guyana. The FPSO is set to arrive in Guyanese waters this year.

EnerMech has secured a five-year contract extension to provide North Oil Company (NOC) with leak testing and flange management services, building upon a strong relationship which stretches back to 2017.
The award, in the Al Shaheen Oil Field, Qatar, reinforces EnerMech’s in-depth expertise, strong relationship with NOC, proven track record of past performance and availability of resource within the country. Crucial to retaining the contract in a competitive tender was EnerMech’s intimate knowledge of NOC’s assets.
The contract covers a range of services, including bolt tensioning and torquing, pipe freezing and training.
Qatar, and the wider Middle East, is an important growth region for EnerMech, with the company poised to take advantage of new markets with its innovation and technologies.
Charles ‘Chuck’ Davison Jr., EnerMech CEO, said: “By securing an extension to an already long-term project is testament to the commitment, hard work and professionalism of the Qatar team.
“I would like to commend Sean Lawless, Country Manager for Qatar for establishing EnerMech as a leading provider of leak testing and flange management services in the region, which puts us in a position to continue the evolution of EnerMech in the Gulf.
“We are proud to work with NOC and look forward to collaborating with our friends and colleagues to ensure the safe and smooth running of operations.”
Dan Collins, Regional Director, AMEC, said: “This arrangement is an important scope of work for EnerMech and highlights our expertise and depth of knowledge in the market.
“As 2025 progresses, we are eager to build on our strong footing in Qatar and continue to work with our clients to provide the best-in-class provisions.”
The Al Shaheen Oil Field is a production field off the north-east coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf, 80 kilometres north of the capital, Doha.
Globally, we are dedicated to putting our people at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating an inclusive culture where every single team member is valued and feels supported. Awareness of issues surrounding mental health and what we can do to provide support for colleagues who might be facing challenges is integral to that commitment.
We are proud to support Time to Talk Day (Thursday, February 6), a nationwide campaign across the UK to encourage and stimulate open, honest conversations about mental health.
To mark this special day, we are shining a spotlight on our team of Mental Health Advocates (MHAs) based in our UK headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland. Emma Maher, Diane McArthur, Laura Moon, Dariusz Roseger, Lewis Steel, Andrew Burnett, Louise Ellis and Shaun Coetzer are all volunteers who have taken on these important roles over and above their day-to-day jobs.
This year’s theme of Time to Talk Day is “Get comfortable and start talking about mental health”. Across the country friends, families, and people in communities and workplaces will come together to talk, listen, and engage in conversation to disperse the stigma that exists around mental health.
Our team of MHAs have differing motivations that lead them to volunteer for this role. They are united in a common purpose to help create a supportive environment where people feel safe to express themselves without fear of judgment. They are there to be a listening ear for those who need it, to provide advice, to show that help is available and that they are not alone.
The contribution they make to ensure that our workplace is a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment is invaluable. People struggling with burdens often feel isolated but talking with others can help them feel comfortable enough to seek help when they need it.
The importance of talking openly and honestly about mental health cannot be overestimated as a way of breaking down the stigma that still exists and prevents so many people from seeking help when they need it.
The UK’s biggest conversation about mental health, Time to Talk Day is run by See Me with Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) in Scotland, Mind and Rethink in England, Inspire in Northern Ireland, and Time to Change Wales, all in partnership with the Co-op.

During this year’s International Men’s Day, EnerMech is celebrating team members across the world, who go above and beyond to support others, both in the workplace and in their home life.
This year’s theme, “Positive Role Models,” encourages us to shine a light on those who make a meaningful difference every day. Across our business, we’ve heard stories of colleagues stepping up to support their teams, clients, and communities, embodying the spirit of care and leadership in everything they do.
David Farquharson, our head of hydraulics, is a strong advocate for professional development, holding two masters’ degrees and continuously encouraging others to pursue growth. Over the years, David has played a key role in mentoring numerous team members through the Robert Gordon University graduate program, contributing to the development of the course content as well. Several of his mentees are now in managerial and leadership roles at EnerMech and two of his direct reports are in the newest intake. “Seeing colleagues exceed their own expectations reminds me just how impactful mentorship can be,” he says. “Guiding them through challenges, from presenting at conferences to leading major projects, is incredibly fulfilling. It’s deeply rewarding to know I’ve played a small role in helping them grow into more confident professionals.”
Ryan Webster, lead recruitment business partner also in Aberdeen, has been the driving force behind EnerMech’s involvement in the Talent Beyond Boundaries (TBB) initiative, launched in 2023. This programme connects displaced skilled refugees with international job opportunities, and Ryan felt it was a perfect fit for EnerMech. Since its launch, he has provided extensive support to two TBB candidates, helping them build new lives in Aberdeen. Looking ahead, he’s excited to expand scheme further, providing more opportunities for skilled refugees in the years to come.
Reflecting on his leadership journey, Abhishek Roy, a project manager in Qatar, attributes much of his success in people management to the mentors and practical experiences that have shaped his path. “My managers throughout my career taught me valuable lessons that I carry with me every day,” he said. In his current role, Abhishek worked to address some early challenges, boosting team morale by enhancing work-life balance, introducing more flexibility and team social gatherings, which positively impacted team and client satisfaction.
One meaningful moment involved supporting a struggling team member. “I knew he just needed someone to believe in him,” Abhishek explains. Through steady support and celebrating small wins, he helped this individual regain confidence, ultimately being named Employee of the Month.
Michael Martinez, senior recruiter in Houston, is a passionate, community-focused individual who brings his dedication to others into every interaction. He believes in the ripple effect of giving, where even small acts of support can lead to lasting change for both the giver and receiver. Michael finds purpose in helping people unlock their potential, whether he’s teaching young adults essential job skills, giving free music lessons to his church community, or simply offering a listening ear. Watching someone grow in confidence, secure their first job, or embrace new skills is his greatest reward. For Michael, life is best lived by lifting each other up and planting seeds for a brighter future together.
Project engineer, Georgios Trapezountios, found purpose and fulfilment through his journey from construction to the oil and gas industry in Qatar. When Georgios joined EnerMech’s cranes & lifting team, he became a steadying force during a period of transition, supporting both new and long-standing team members. As a result of his calm and collaborative approach, he encouraged others to focus on teamwork. His positive role-modeling has helped create a stress-free work environment, and Georgios has been recognised by EnerMech for fostering a culture of support and collaboration.
His advice to others is to lead with unity, prioritizing “we” and “us” over individual achievements. “I believe in breaking down personal barriers to build a team that thrives on each member’s strengths. This approach doesn’t just enhance projects but also creates a workplace where everyone feels valued,” he said.
For Kazakhstani Janak Anil Shah, a project engineer in Qatar, nurturing talent is an essential part of his role. “There’s no ‘one size fits all’ in mentoring,” he explains, emphasizing the need to adapt to each team member’s unique skills and learning style. Reflecting on his own early career, Janak says, “I was once a new start too, and my mentors guided me generously.” Paying it forward, his own guidance has been recognized for helping juniors grow quickly and confidently, making the team more efficient and self-reliant.
A memorable success for Janak came when he trained his team in winch overhauling—a complex skill initially challenging for many. Through consistent training, the team became proficient, greatly improving efficiency and quality.
“Mentoring builds trust,” he shares. “It opens dialogue, strengthens teamwork, and boosts productivity.” For Janak, mentorship isn’t just a duty – it’s a fulfilling part of his role that enriches both his knowledge and team connections.
This is just a snapshot of the inspiring role models we have throughout our business. We are proud to have this opportunity to celebrate their positive impact and grateful for the chance to share more about a few of them.

Collaboration with a major U.S. midstream operator is company’s largest pre-commissioning nitrogen membrane spread utilizing coiled tubing
EnerMech has completed a milestone pre-commissioning project for a major U.S. energy infrastructure company in the Gulf of Mexico, marking the organization’s largest nitrogen membrane spread to be deployed to date in this geography.
The contract, first awarded in August 2023, was completed over an 11-month period and saw the business deliver its first ever 10,000 SCFM nitrogen spread in water depths of 8,800ft. EnerMech provided a turn-key service covering the delivery of specialized services for oil and gas export pipelines for the midstream operator.
That included chartering three light construction vessels (LCVs), coiled tubing and the design and fabrication of pig launchers and receivers. By working directly, their client, benefited from significant project efficiencies by eliminating the requirement to liaise with other third-party providers.
Services for both the oil and gas export pipelines included flooding, cleaning, gauging, hydrotesting, and dewatering. EnerMech deployed its in-house designed Remote Flooding Console (RFC) and Subsea Test Pump (STP) to manage free flooding and hydrotesting at a water depth of 8,800 feet. In addition, multiple high-flow triplex pumps were utilized for hydrotesting the oil export pipeline. A single vessel was equipped for the 10,000 SCFM nitrogen membrane spread, which comprised 18 compressors, 5 nitrogen membranes, 7 nitrogen boosters, and 2 7/8” coiled tubing units.
Working out of EnerMech’s Houston base, the project was safely delivered by a specialist offshore staff of 30 personnel, including field supervisors, engineers and technicians.
Charles ‘Chuck’ Davison Jr., EnerMech CEO, said: “We are extremely proud to have completed this project, with a number of significant achievements accomplished along the way. The quick and efficient undertaking of these services to the highest standard is testament to the ability and dedication of both our team in Houston and the strong relationship built with this major U.S. midstream operator.
“I’d like to thank Brennon Fitzgerald (General Manager – Process and Pipeline) and the team for their immense efforts over the course of the last year and also to our customer for trusting us to get the job done in a timely manner.”

These two new contracts align with our strategic vision to expand our pipeline and subsea capabilities in the region to support the current sector’s needs and the anticipated larger projects on the horizon.
“EnerMech is in a strong position to win further subsea pipelines and umbilicals pre-commissioning projects as we have many years of expertise delivering similar project solutions around the world. This allows our teams to leverage the knowledge, experience and lessons learnt with the skills required to deliver exceptional value add and efficiencies and results for our clients every time.”
Behzad Kazerani, EnerMech’s Chief Business Development Officer and General Manager, Asia, added: “EnerMech is well placed in Asia and Malaysia to support our customers regional projects with the necessary specialist technical capabilities, combined with state-of-the-art equipment, to deliver the required technical and innovative solutions.
For over 100 years, Trinidad and Tobago has been a vital producer of energy to the Caribbean.
It is the largest oil and gas producer in the region and contributes an estimated 35.7% of GDP, 78.4% of exports (2019), and 23.4% to Government revenue.
To enable cost efficient and timely production, safety is key, particularly in the case of crane operations. The transportation of heavy equipment, installation and maintenance, handling of subsea equipment and material handling are all reliant on such provisions running smoothly and efficiently.
At EnerMech, this is something we appreciate, and a collective commitment to safety, quality and integrity is at the cornerstone of what we do.
An individual who personifies these beliefs is Dayne Phillips, who has recently celebrated a 10-year anniversary as General Manager of EnerMech Trinidad & Tobago.
Dayne led the market entry in the country for our mechanical services and has worked on projects with bp, BGTT, Shell, BHP, EOG, DeNovo and the National Gas Company of Trinidad & Tobago during his time with us.
And more recently, he’s been working with bp to supply crane operators, inspection services and maintenance.
Here he talks about pride in his safety record in the Caribbean country and the work we are involved in across the region.
Could you tell us a little bit about projects EnerMech is involved in in Trinidad & Tobago?
The oil and gas sector is hugely important to the Trinidad & Tobago economy, accounting for 35% of the country’s GDP. We’re incredibly proud to be contributing to this and the training of local staff.
We’re currently working with a major operator and have been since 2022, providing crane operation and maintenance as well as loose lifting equipment across a number of their facilities. We provide a one-stop-shop that meets all of their needs, including supply of crane operators, inspection services and maintenance execution.
Our work with this client has grown as we are able to deliver a streamlined service through our ability to cover a multi-skilled type of maintenance support. This includes leveraging our global expertise via our Aberdeen personnel and our crane experts based in the Caspian Sea who also work with bp.
Dayne, in your decade at EnerMech, what is it you’re most proud of in your time at the company?
I’ve been in the contracting business for over 17 years, and I always tell my staff the reason why people call for Dayne Phillips is because in all my years working in the sector, there have never been any incidents or accidents on the projects I’m involved in.
The main reason this is the case is because I make sure we don’t take shortcuts. And the reason why we don’t take shortcuts is that we always aim to do the right thing and that that is the philosophy I push all the time.
What are some of your highlights in your time at EnerMech?
Over the last decade, the business has grown steadily and our reputation along with it. It’s a well-known challenging market because of its mature nature, so this ongoing success is testament to the commitment and dedication of our staff.
Guyana is really the new kid on the block and the sector is really picking up but we have been able to hold our own within the T&T region.
That we’ve also been able to work on most of the new pipelines in the region and earn major operational and maintenance contracts is an immense source of pride.
What does the future hold for EnerMech in Trinidad & Tobago?
In the coming years, Trinidad & Tobago is targeting an immense increase in its renewable energy production. For us, that presents opportunities to consolidate and build on existing relationships and also build new ones. This region has a proud history of energy production and we look forward to being at the forefront of its evolution in the coming years and decades.

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) was marked on Sunday 23rd June, and we want to celebrate the powerhouse women at EnerMech who are crucial to our success.
This year’s theme, ‘Enhanced by Engineering,’ highlights the positive impact engineering has on our society and everyday lives.
On this INWED, we explore the remarkable achievements of the women at EnerMech who have shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for a more inclusive and innovative world.
Amrisha Vishal
Amrisha Vishal joined EnerMech in May 2023 as a software engineer in Mumbai.
Her interest in engineering began during her school years, where she excelled in science and maths. However, it was the constant advancements in technology that truly sparked her passion in the field. “We are the millennial generation, and we have witnessed the birth and progress of technology. The shift from using disposable reel-based cameras to cameras in cell phones has been remarkable. This constant evolution of technology inspired me to pursue engineering because it never gets boring.” Amrisha explained.
“My advice to young women looking to pursue a career in engineering is simple: it’s the best choice. Engineers need to keep upgrading their skills which means we keep learning and developing, becoming more confident and shaping our personality.”
Indira Texeira
Indira Texeira joined EnerMech through one of our internships in the operations department in Luanda, Angola. During the three-month period, she thrived in this traditionally male-dominated environment, where she learned everything from pressure testing to valve operations.
Initially inspired to take up a career in engineering by a painting of an oil rig on the living room wall at her mother’s house, she has three pieces of advice for young woman considering a career in the engineering industry:
Sayali Pawar
Sayali Pawar is one of our IT support analysts in Mumbai and has always been captivated by gadgets, computers, and modern innovation. It’s this curiosity that naturally led her to explore the field of engineering, where she could delve deeper into mechanics.
She explained: “Excelling in physics and maths academically fueled my decision to pursue engineering, as the problem-solving approach in these subjects made engineering the ideal field to apply these skills. EnerMech has provided a conducive environment for learning, growth, and honing my skills, allowing me to gain valuable experience and expertise in the IT domain.”
Sayali believes pursuing a career in engineering to be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling path for anyone, including young women. She added: “My advice is to pursue your engineering dreams and passions, believe in yourself, seek support and mentorship, embrace learning and resilience, advocate for yourself, and celebrate diversity.”
Rima Naik
Rima Naik is our business financial performance analyst in Mumbai and has been with the business since 2023. She chose to pursue engineering as she loves putting her skills and knowledge to the test.
One of her career highlights was when she was promoted to business process manager for the Central Eastern Europe & Middle East region within one year of joining EnerMech and she is grateful for the ongoing encouragement and opportunities she has received: “I feel very fortunate to work for a company which is open to new ideas and concepts and is willing to accept and implement best practices from other organisations and industries. This environment really allows you to constantly challenge yourself and bring out the best in you.”
Celebrating and promoting diversity across our workforce, every day of the year, in every country in which we operate, is fundamental to the way we run our business and to our long-standing commitment to equal opportunity.
Today, on International Women’s Day, we come together to celebrate and thank the women working across our operations whose contribution is integral to EnerMech’s success.
This year’s theme is “Inspire Inclusion” and here we shine a spotlight on just a few of these talented individuals whose skills and talent bring so much to us as a company and who are such excellent advocates for this year’s theme.
“The role and the contribution which women make to sectors such as ours, which have historically been recognized as male dominated, is celebrated through global events such as International Women’s Day and we are very pleased to be supporting this once more,” said Phil Ogden, chief HR officer.
“EnerMech has always been proactive in promoting the benefits of a diverse workforce, recognizing and applauding the richness, benefits, and advantages that this brings to our operations around the world, to our colleagues and to our clients.
“We are committed to providing equal chances to all, enabling our colleagues to build sustainable and satisfying career paths within EnerMech. We see this as crucial in not only retaining our talented personnel but in ensuring that our people have opportunities for their own personal development.”
Leigh Haynes, Australia
Leigh Haynes, our regional HR manager in Australia has been with the company for just over three years, initially as industrial relations manager before being promoted to her current role in December 2022.
In that time Leigh, who says her job satisfaction comes from achieving her goals and delivering a service that supports our operations, has enjoyed several career highlights.
As part of the Indigenous and Local Community Committee, she was involved in the coordination and execution of several initiatives and events which celebrate and support diversity inclusion; completed a mentoring programme with the National Association of Women in Operations (NAWO); and has been involved in the successful implementation of our Employee Relations Strategy.
“Being given the opportunity to take on the regional HR manager role has been a significant opportunity for me. It has consolidated my experience, and being able to develop a team of strong individuals is important. The regional director for the Asia Pacific (APAC) region having faith in me, providing me with the opportunity and recognizing my abilities is important to me,” said Leigh.
“HR is such a broad and ever developing area and I would highly recommend it to others. I’d suggest that anyone who studies HR at university enters HR as a generalist to learn as much as possible, so they can identify the areas that interest them as they progress through their career.”
Julie Thorpe, New Zealand
Julie Thorpe, our financial controller in New Zealand moved over to become part of the EnerMech team following the acquisition of Stork Technical Services NZ in 2022.
Julie and her team are now responsible for all the financial functions of the New Zealand arm of the organisation. She’s also finance business partner to the EnerMech NZ management team and the liaison with Australia for regional reporting.
Julie said the main achievement to date from her time at EnerMech, was also her greatest challenge – implementing the transition from Stork financial systems to EnerMech financial systems. Having successfully achieved that, she values the opportunities that are now available to her since joining EnerMech.
“I enjoy continuous improvement and I am finding the leadership training provided by EnerMech interesting,” she said. “Finance is a good career choice and I’d recommend it to other women. The initial studies to qualify for a role such as this is available through extra mural learning. Having done that, it’s a role that offers the flexibility to work from home for part of the time.”
Nurshafiqah Binte Abdul Rahman, Singapore
Nurshafiqah Binte Abdul Rahman has worked as a workshop coordinator in Singapore for 18 months and says she gets a great deal of satisfaction through her work.
“I enjoy planning,” she said, “When tasks are delivered on schedule, especially when it’s urgent, it gives me the satisfaction that I have done a good job.
“What I love about EnerMech is that they send me on courses that I’m interested in. Last year, I enrolled in and passed a forklift course. The next two courses I’m attending will be on first aid and flange management.”
She said she would recommend her job to other women.
“Every day I learn new and different skills. For example, my colleagues have taught me a lot of aspects related to engineering.”
The best advice she’s ever had from another woman?
“Women may not be as physically strong as men, but a woman is just as capable as a man of doing jobs that are typically considered to be male jobs.”
Laura Moir, Europe
Laura Moir, Operations Manager – Training, UK, first joined EnerMech in 2012, working for four years in business development, before leaving to manage her own business. She returned to EnerMech in January 2022 in her current role.
In her position, which has a strong focus on safety, Laura said she gets the greatest job satisfaction from ensuring the safety of both clients and colleagues.
“I like to think that I contribute considerably to that through the work I do,” she said. “There are no safety shortcuts, and our courses are delivered by a hand-picked team that, like me, care greatly about our staff and clients and their long-term safety and success.
“I love what I do. I get excited about new opportunities and challenges at work and genuinely care about the success of our team, individually and as a whole. I have always felt valued in both my roles at EnerMech. I have a great manager who trusts me to use my own initiative, try new things and make time for my own personal development.
“It’s long been identified that a more diverse and inclusive workforce is a key priority for our industry,” said Laura. “I saw this quote recently and love it: ‘Women bring different leadership skills and backgrounds. It’s not a diversity of gender, it’s about the diversity of thought’.”
Anna DeRose USA
Anna DeRose joined EnerMech as technical manager – semiconductors six months ago and works across various locations in the US. When she entered the construction sector as a labourer 25 years ago, she said things were quite different and there weren’t many women working in construction.
“Times are now changing and being a woman in construction is becoming more common,” she said, “but when I first started in this field, I found myself working twice as hard to be given the same consideration as my male counterparts.
“My response was to always go the extra mile to make sure my work was above average and to build my reputation on this.”
It’s an approach and commitment which paid off. After completing her apprenticeship as a journeyman in plumbing, gas fitting and pipe fitting and gaining her welding certification on site, she has continued to add to her qualifications and accreditations.
With those, she has steadily climbed the career ladder to hold a variety of different roles including construction coordinator, general operations manager, superintendent, quality assurance supervisor and senior project manager.
She is now committed to supporting other women in their construction journey, in a large part through her involvement with Women in Construction (WIC), an independent not-for-profit organisation that promotes gender equality in construction, and through her volunteering projects.
“As a licenced plumber/welder I regularly get asked to give presentations and demonstrations at events,” said Anna. “I also volunteer and out teach programmes with K-12 students. It’s very hands on, the kids love it and I get a buzz from inspiring and mentoring.
“I have been in construction for 25 years and while there have been challenges, the good has always outweighed the bad. I have always been an advocate for WIC and will always be an advocate for any woman who wants to make the move into construction. The opportunities afforded to me and my family by being in this field are unmatched.”
During this year’s Women in Construction (WIC) Week, taking place across the US, (3rd – 9th March) we celebrate and promote our colleagues operating in the industry. Now in its 26th year, the theme for 2024 Is ‘Keys to the Future’, looking at how females are shaping the sector to make it more inclusive and accessible for the next generation.
When Anna DeRose entered the construction industry as a labourer more than 25 years ago, she was very much a woman in a man’s world, both in her work environment and when she started her apprenticeship at Central New Mexico Community College (CNM).
In the years since then, thanks to a combination of hard work, a determination to prove herself and simply being very good at her job, she has worked her way up the construction ladder to her current role as Technical Manager.
Most of her career has been spent working in semiconductors and she joined EnerMech in September, being headhunted from her previous role as a senior project manager. As a member of the management team, Anna’s new role includes providing all technical support to semiconductor projects in Arizona and New Mexico, working with client and partner organizations to ensure KPI’s are achieved, and developing execution strategies to continually improve delivery.
“I’ve previously worked on both the client and trade side of things, so this is like joining the dots and completing the triangle,” she said
“I had worked as a labourer for two years before the company I was working for put me into a four-year apprenticeship programme for plumbing, gas fitting, and pipe fitting at CNM through the Associated Builders and Contractors, (ABC),” she said, “I also got my welding certification on site.”
Anna’s third child was born just before she completed her apprenticeship and determined not to miss any of her final lessons, she took the baby to class with her when she was only a few days old. That didn’t go down particularly well with some male classmates, but her instructor said she had just as much right to be there as anyone else, and said if anyone had an issue with that, “there’s the door”.
Anna, who had the highest grade point average (GPA) in her class, is one of only three women to have graduated from CNM as a journeyman and to date, is still the only woman to have gained three journeyman licenses from the college. Since then, she’s gained many additional certifications, some semiconductor specific and others necessary industry standards. She’s also worked in hospitals and for the pharmaceuticals sector and has relevant welding certification for that sector.
After completing her apprenticeship she worked as a journeyman for about 12 years, moving on from there a variety of different roles including construction coordinator, general operations manager, superintendent, quality assurance supervisor and senior project manager. During that time she worked in six states and in four countries outside the US – Singapore, Ireland, Malaysia and Costa Rica.
“I learned by trial and error, and I’ve had some great mentors and people who advocated for me,” said Anna. “But on the other side of the fence, I wasn’t always valued and was told I didn’t belong there.
“It was at that point I found my phoenix and decided to take every opportunity to learn new things, take any additional apprenticeship training or anything else to gain additional certifications and licenses.”
While more women are now entering the construction sector compared to when Anna started, they are still very underrepresented with WIC’s latest figures showing that only around 10 percent of all construction workers in the US are female.
Anna says she is committed to supporting women who are working in the industry – and to encouraging more females to consider it as a career route – that includes her little sister who joined EnerMech to train as a pipefitter.
“EnerMech now has six females working in semiconductors on site in New Mexico which is great. At the moment though there is no semiconductor apprenticeship available in the state. I’d like to help change and drive that, to do whatever needs to be done to help. I’m advocating for ABC to introduce an apprenticeship programme so that we can give these girls a platform to take their career forward.
“I’m always ready to provide mentoring support for them at any time and to lend a listening ear, because I didn’t have a female mentor when I started out.
“As a licensed plumber/welder I regularly get asked to give presentations and demonstrations at events. I also volunteer and out teach programmes with K-12 students. It’s very hands on, the kids love it and I get a buzz from inspiring and mentoring.
“I’ve also taught my own kids, Sebastian (19), Natalya (17) and Izabella (15) to weld. Along with my husband, they often come to help me with the set up at voluntary events and we make it a family thing with all of us getting involved.”
So what next for Anna?
“I still strive to be the best that I can be, and in doing that, create value for others and an environment that women want to be in.”
EnerMech’s training centre in Aberdeen has achieved two additional OPITO global training accreditations, allowing the business to develop the skills and competencies of personnel working in lifting operations in any industry around the world.
The company’s dedicated facility was originally established to upskill the North Sea’s offshore workforce. In his new position, Rhys will oversee more than 60 employees across the North and South Islands from Whangarei to Invercargill.
He commented: “I am thrilled to be at the helm of this division and support the strategic growth plans for the business. EnerMech New Zealand is full of exceptionally talented people and I have enjoyed getting to know everyone better over the past few months.
“With so many new projects already in the pipeline, it’s an exciting time to come on board. EnerMech has a great reputation for effectively responding to client issues with integrated action plans. With well resourced interconnected service lines to leverage, the company is in a very unique position to deliver solutions which reduce campaign complexities and mitigate risk, while promoting safety and integrity.”
In December last year, EnerMech acquired Stork New Zealand & Australia, strengthening the organisation’s ability to provide a scalable rapid response across the full asset life cycle to multiple end markets. The additional skills, competence and technologies also boosted its localised integrity management and industrial services as well as more niche heat treatment projects.
Garry Ford, EnerMech regional director for Asia Pacific added: “Last year’s acquisition extended our footprint into New Zealand for the first time and consolidated our core capabilities with a 40-year track record of integrity management services. It has therefore been a priority to attract a leader of Rhys’ calibre to accelerate our next growth phase while continuing to foster our safety culture across all our diverse operations for reliable project delivery.
“EnerMech’s reputation has been built on relationships and trust. With Rhys’ strong track record for motivating high performance teams, we are confident the combination of this with his business acumen and commitment, will see our ambitions for the region become a reality.”
EnerMech was established in 2008 and provides critical asset support across the full life cycle to multiple end markets including oil and gas, LNG semiconductors, nuclear and clean energy.
EnerMech, a leading global specialist in delivering technical solutions for complex projects has entered a strategic joint venture (JV) with PT. Titian Servis Indonesia (TSI), an integrated turn around services firm with deep local expertise in Indonesia’s oil and gas sector. This collaboration marks an important milestone in EnerMech’s expansion strategy and underscores its commitment to establishing a strong presence in the Asia Pacific market.
The partnership aims to deliver an innovative and scalable business solution that caters to the unique demands of the region with a focus on enhancing operational efficiency, quality and optimization utilization of EnerMech’s global resources and supply chain.
The two businesses have worked together on various projects since early 2022. The new entity, which will operate under the name ‘EnerMech Titian JVA’, will leverage EnerMech’s extensive global expertise across its specialist service lines, cutting-edge technology and equipment fleet, combined with TSI’s intimate understanding of the Indonesian market, its local capabilities, and industry experience.
To ensure its current and future employees meet and share the same globally recognized standards for skills and competency, world-class training solutions provider 3t EnerMech has been engaged to help upskill its Indonesian personnel to become accredited trainers.
With bases in Jakarta and Batam its workforce, which include a number of local hires, is headed up by EnerMech’s regional director for Asia Pacific, Garry Ford. He said: “We are thrilled to officially join forces with TSI and establish a strong presence in Indonesia through this strategic JV. Our collaboration represents a significant step forward in our commitment to delivering excellence across all the sectors and country’s we operate in, as well as contributing to economic development. As well as having access to our global pool of talent, we will also be training the local workforce through 3t EnerMech to ensure we have more accredited trainers to be able to deliver the training courses locally also.
“TSI has proven to be a trusted partner and by combining strengths, we are creating a powerful synergy that will enable us to deliver unparalleled value to our clients in the Asia Pacific market.”
Tanta Tarigan, managing director from TSI said: “We have a shared vision with EnerMech to drive innovation and foster sustainable growth across Indonesia and the wider the Asia Pacific region. Through this partnership and training support for the locals on our team, we aim to establish a global benchmark for project execution and delivery while further solidifying our positions as leaders in our respective fields. The new partnership delivers a truly differentiated experience for our clients.”
Hydrogen plays a pivotal role in shaping our clean energy future and to meet the Paris Agreement target, uptake of the gas needs to triple to meet 15% of energy demand by mid-century. The adoption of H2 is a vital solution to support these global decarbonisation goals and there are endless opportunities to develop this important energy source.
Alex Lechner, business development executive, discussed how the adoption of H2 is a vital solution to support these global decarbonisation goals and the endless opportunities available to develop this important energy source.
He said: “At EnerMech, as we operate across the full project life cycle, within the sector, we are witnessing a rising number of large, global operators actively investing in hydrogen as they increasingly realise the value of its application.
“Pilot projects to support the scale-up of hydrogen rely heavily on funding and it has been encouraging to see a number of government-backed initiatives implemented to support this regionally, from the United States Inflation Reduction Act to Australia’s Hydrogen Head start. However, there are still significant opportunities for private investment which remain untapped which are essential to driving the sector forward and supporting the infrastructure and technology required to accelerate the application of hydrogen.”
There are challenges which the industry must first overcome which prevent this from being a straight road to success. While hydrogen has been present in oil refineries for decades, the commercialisation of the gas is still in its relative infancy. With only a small number of major projects, there are few economies of scale.
Alex continued: “The hydrogen sector also requires specialist personnel. Many skills from traditional energy markets are transferrable, and this is why EnerMech can operate cross-sector with ease in an integrated way. However, there is still significant work to do in developing a workforce to meet this demand.”
EnerMech has a proven track record of successfully supporting several hydrogen projects globally, particularly in Australia. The firm recently completed a significant installation and pre-commissioning contract in the region for one of Asia Pacific’s first direct Methylcyclohexane (MCH) hydrogen pilot plants. The development will use renewable energy to generate hydrogen, with toluene mixed instantly to create MCH.
As the energy transition accelerates, H2 offers exponential opportunities for the traditional energy sector to apply its expertise to this thriving market. Alex said: “In the next 10 years, I hope to see hydrogen adopted as a common, domestic energy source globally. This requires significant global efforts, greater collaboration between operators and the supply chain, as well as trust building with the general public, which I firmly believe can be achieved as we strive towards this common goal to support a cleaner energy future.”
EnerMech has unveiled its renewed focus on resources and services in India which will be spearheaded by two new senior hires in country.
Rahul Dalela was appointed last year to head up its in-country operations as General Manager, and Chetan Mistry has joined as Head of Finance, Accounts and Shared Services.
The organisation is bolstering its capabilities as part of its strategic objectives to consolidate and extend its shared services team’s expertise across the organisation’s 48 global locations to support its growing orderbook as it expands into new geographies and new end markets.
Established in 2012 with nine employees, EnerMech’s ‘shared services’ team has become an instrumental part of the company’s engineering offering globally. It also acts as a central hub for business services and IT support to the wider global organisation. With a current headcount of circa 200, the firm saw an 84% headcount growth in 2022, with an initial focus on the semiconductor and manufacturing sector wins.
It has also committed to a long-term lease for office space at Sahar Plaza Complex, Andheri-Kurla Road, Andheri (East), Mumbai.
Rahul joined EnerMech from HSBC where he served for nine years. A qualified chartered and management accountant, he brings over 25 years of progressive experience, with tenures in Bangalore and Kolkata. He has led and implemented multiple streamlining initiatives which resulted in notable efficiencies and cost savings for his business streams across India and Sri Lanka.
Chetan, a seasoned entrepreneur, joined the business early this year bringing 20 years of experience in business management, operational planning and revenue generation. Chetan has been actively involved in EnerMech India since inception handling finance and setting up the shared services in the initial stages.
Rahul commented: “EnerMech has built its success on being able to maintain a high-quality service delivery wherever it operates. When I joined, the initial focus for additional engineering recruitment in India was to bolster the team with piping specialists to work on semiconductor-related projects for the manufacturing industry. Since then, we have also grown our process, pipeline and umbilical engineering team to provide a fast-response deployment team to aid global campaign requirements in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, and heavy industries.
“We are also building out the business support team with a number of new full-time members, as part of our business integration strategy. We have hired Finance and IT specialists to enhance our centralised round-the-clock cross-functional unit, delivering further efficiencies across the business.
“I am honoured to be part of the leadership team within EnerMech delivering continually improving support to our clients.”
Christian Brown, CEO EnerMech, said: “The Mumbai office was set up 11 years ago and the positive impact the engineering, business support services and IT teams have had on our organisation is undeniable. We are a progressive and employee focussed company and we plan to fortify our offering worldwide by capitalising on the talent pool, systems and shared capabilities in India.
“EnerMech strives to consistently deliver a reliable, high-quality service to our customers that is both cost-effective and competitive. These areas of increased competence and investment in working practices ensure we can scale up our operations and with Rahul at the helm, supported by Chetan, we have the utmost confidence this continues to be assured.”
